Who we are:
FIRE: Fernie Adaptive Snow Program is a recreational program designed to allow individuals with differing abilities the opportunity to enjoy skiing/snowboarding at Fernie Alpine Resort. FIRE consists of a group of specialized instructors certified and trained to be innovative and creative in adapting teaching methods for our students. Whether our students are stand-up skiers/snowboarders or sit skiers, we are prepared to “see the ability” and adapt to their needs.
FIRE begins the third week of January and typically ends the first week of April. The program runs for approximately 12 weeks, depending on weather conditions. The main program runs every Sunday, from 9:00am to 11:00am or from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. However, students are now able to book lessons mid week upon request and depending on instructor availability. Because of the generous support from our sponsors and Fernie Alpine Resort, we offer the program for $20 per lesson, $30 if rental equipment such as a sit ski or ski rentals are needed. We also offer the option of full season payment, $240 or $360 with equipment rentals. We require that our students become a member with BCAS: BC Adaptive Snowsports. This provides insurance for our students while participating in the program. This yearly membership costs $49.
Upon request, FIRE may be able to arrange private lessons, depending on volunteer instructor availability. We offer half day private lessons at $40 per lesson, $50 if rental equipment is needed. We require that students become a member with BCAS: BC Adaptive Snowsports. This provides insurance for our students while participating in the program. This yearly membership costs $49. Please get in touch with us to check private lesson availability.
Who can join?
We offer our program to youth and adults throughout the Elk Valley and surrounding area. We also offer lessons to out-of-town guests. Our only requirement is that our students have a diagnosable disability, whether mental or physical. Our goal is to have our program accessible to anyone wanting to ski or snowboard.
How do I register myself or my child?
We desire our registration process to be as simple as possible, which is why it can be completed in three easy steps:
1. Contact us to ensure we have space and to get any questions you may have answered. Contact information is mentioned at the end of this document.
2. Become a current member of BCAS: BC Adaptive Snowsports. Among other things, BCAS (Formerly DSABC) provides F.I.R.E. with insurance protection. Once you get in contact with us, we will send you the information on how to become a member.
3. Complete the Student Form, waiver, and optional photo release, which we will send to you so we know your needs.
* Students using a sit ski must weigh less than 175lbs for safety reasons (Safe lifting/Equipment Failure)
